What is furry?

The word "furry" has two relevant meanings:

  1. Fictional characters with a mix of human and animal traits (like mascots and cartoons).
  2. People who enjoy art and other creative works featuring these characters.

The furry community (also called the "furry fandom") is comprised of people from around the world who celebrate imagination. Many people find it to be a safe place to express themselves, escape from stress, and meet new friends.

What is a fursona?

People who are furries often invent characters based on their own personality for roleplay and cosplay purposes. This type of character is called a "fursona" (furry + persona) and usually adopts the appearance of a creature known for similar traits. For example, someone may base their fursona on a cheerful dog, clever fox, or courageous lion.

What is a fursuit?

Fursuits are costumes people wear to bring imaginary furry characters to life. They may be constructed with foam, artificial fur, and 3D-printed plastic parts. They can be built from scratch or purchased from a professional fursuit maker. Many hours of skilled work goes into these works of art, so please remember to be respectful and gentle when interacting with fursuiters.

Is furry for all ages?

There's a lot to enjoy for all ages within the furry fandom! However, parents should offer guidance to children navigating the space. Some types of artwork, products, and social groups within the fandom are for adults only (18+) and are usually marked as such, as required by law.
